The Tamil concept of Love, Love Making and Divinity

The love poems of Sangam have made inroads into religion. The two best examples one can give is that of Kambaramayanam and Kanthapuranam. The Murugan- Valli love episode of Kasiappasivachariyar's Kanthapuranam is straight lift from a few Sangam love themes(it would take me a separate blog to point this out to the readers..hope I do a blog on this topic soon!). In this essay I would like to go into Theme of Love making in Sangam literature and its parallel in Religious poetry and philosophy. Love making and Religion ...parallels? is it possible? well you have to read through this essay,

Gifts and Seduction

Hero meets Heroine in festival...gives her gift and seduces her.... Kurunthokai 223

Hero’s Blackmail- Kurunthokai 276

This poem is one most interesting themes of the Akam poetry. In this theme the Hero who is being denied access to meet his lady love , threatens the friend of the lover that he has already made love to her and knows all secrets if her and would expose this secret to every one if the he wasn't granted access to his lover.

100th post – Guest blog by Dr.N.Kannan

This is a very special occasion for me. The 100th post of Karka Nirka blog. And I have decided to give a treat to all my readers. Hence a guest post and there no better person to write on this Blog than Dr. N.Kannan. Dr.Kannan is the Director of Tamil Heritage Foundation and also a poet and an author(http://www.e-mozi.com/articles/biosketch.html , http://freenet-homepage.de/bliss/bio_english.html) . To me he is one important person associated with this blog indirectly. I post my blogs in MinTamil group where Dr.Kannan is a moderator. When I started posting in MinTamil at times I would get brilliant insights from Dr.Kannan which never occured to me from Dr.Kannan. He and other members in MinTamil have posted valuable comments and reviews on the post and have encouraged me to write more on Sangam Tamil. I couldn't find any better person than Dr.Kannan to be the person to be part of my 100th post. Dr.Kannan asked me wether he could write in Tamil and I gleefuly accepted since I thought atleast the 100th post in a blog which speaks the greatness of Tamil to be in Tamil. For non Tamil readers, I will translate this work soon. Finally I would like to thank Dr.Kannan for accepting to write a guest post for me in his very busy schedule.

What if he lies ? – Kurunthokai 25

This is one of the most interesting poems and popular poem of sangam era. The Talaivi(heroine) is doubtful whether Talaivan would return back and marry her. She has already lost her virginity to the talaivan. She is now very fearful since nobody has ever seen them together and incase if Talaivan decides to cheat on her, she has no proof to show that she had lost her virginity to the talaivan.
