I would like to thank Dr.Francis Muthu, who encouraged me to convert this blog into a research paper. I have recently written a paper ‘Kuṟiñcippāṭṭu and 99 flowers’ to been soon published in a journal. I researched for a month in addition to time spent compiling this blog and the knowledge gained in the two years. Based on my findings I have updated this blog. This blog would now feature photos of all 99 flowers (annicam is not properly identified yet). The blog will be further updated once the paper gets published.

First I would like you to watch this video. This is Surya from Poovellam Kettuppar.
He mentions name of 100 flowers and nearly most of the flowers he has mentioned are taken from a poem from Sangam Literature.
Kapilar , one of the greatest poets in Sangam era had mentioned 99 flowers found in the Kurunji region(Mountainous region).Below are the lines from Kurunjippaatu

When I was reading Kurunjipaatu, I wondered how all these 99 flowers would look like. Then I decided I would try to make a blog on these 99 flowers like I have done before for few other flowers in my wordlist series. But this one was more arduous work than I thought.

Something interesting I found…but i dont know how valid it is,
“The wood of ebony is used as firewood, as it can burn even in moist conditions.”

Going by these two, I understand it as….
Margali is the season Andal keeps her fast. Margali is traditionally winter and 1000 years back it must have been really cold in the morning. So Sulli would have given the continuous fire which is required. It was the need of the hour! a wood which would burn even in very cold and moist conditions….
it also looks like ceylon ebony must have been really costly (unless they have it in their backyard) …so we can assume Andal must have been really desperate and ready to do anything to acquire the lord!

It would be a grave mistake if I dont point this out….
“Prof. Vaiyapuri Pillai (1891-1956) was a renowned scholar of Tamil. An advocate by profession, he edited and published several Tamil classics from original manuscripts. He is best remembered as the editor of the Tamil lexicon published by the Madras University in the 1920s. He was a voracious reader and had in his own private collection thousands of books in Tamil, English, Sanskrit and Malayalam. His collection also included hundreds of palm leaf manuscripts. This collection was later donated to the National Library at Calcutta.”
Without the great scholars who worked to create the Tamil lexicon …nothing could have been done by people by me.
If at all one has to thank for this blog all thanks should go to the great scholars who compiled this Tamil Lexicon!

Dear Palaniappan, Great work. Path breaking. If we could identify all the birds and mammals mentioned in Sangam literature, then we will have an idea of what we have lost. For instance..what is ‘kavari maan’? One has to have a good knowledge of birds and mammals and also be familiar with ancient Tamil to attempt this. . Hope your example will be followed.
The work is not much complex sir. It can be done even by school children. Restriction from my side is only time. Say if 20 to 30 school students work on it it just matter of 2 weeks work!

thank you for this lovely post. i came across your blog searching for the pictures of the flowers. my mother was reminiscing about all the beautiful flowers like manoranjitham and shenbagam flowers which used to be so common when she was a little girl, but have almost disappeared now. i was curious as i have not even seen a manoranjitham or magudam poo and started googling for it, and came across your blog.

Hello friend. It is me again. I saw you slide show of flower and appreciate for you good work. Regarding flowers I wish to point out that the flower you shown under the caption AVIRAI is commonly known as AVARAMPOO. Under the caption THALAI it is shown the flower of coconut nut tree. But THALAI in the sense of flower it means THALAMPOO whi;ch is shown under caption KAITHAI. It is leaf of the plant with fragrance. Normaly mango sours in taste. By mentioning it as THEMA I think it may be the mango called as Bangalora which is taste lesser sour and is edible in unripe state also. Pacharimangai is also similar one. Thank you

I am not sure if you are aware of this. Apparently the species identity of all the 99 flowers have been established in the seventies itself. Siromoney in his article on the net on ”
Tambaram flora and early Tamil literature” cites this reference: P. L. Samy, ‘The plant names in Kurinjippaattu’, Journal of Tamil Studies, September 1972, pp. 78-103

I am very pleased to hv come across your site, 25% of the flowers I hv seen. It would be greatful, if I can get the picture of ven kanthal flower( white kanthal) red kanthal is the flower of T.N. plz.. Thank you.
I’ve a book of essays somewhere in my house:-) One of them was on this paattu – it was all about how a few names were indecipherable due to the chuvadi getting damaged. And how the author went about chasing sources after sources to get the missing names. reads like a thriller. Contd.
I think the essay is by Ki Va Ja.
Now interestingly the essayist speculates on possible reasons for the poet to mention these flowers: a) the poet wanted to show off his knowledge b) the poet wanted to point out the rich flora of those times c) The thalaivi’s thozhi by this lengthy narration wanted the mother’s anger to abate.
This is all I recall from reading it several decades ago.
