99 Tamil flowers – Kurunji paatu – flowers 1-10

Flowers 1- 10 out of the 99 flowers listed in Kurunji paatu.

1.காந்தள் kāntal

Can be either Malabar Glory lily or Indian Coral tree or Scarlet Bahunia.

2. ஆம்பல் āmpal :

n. 1. [K. ābal, M. Tu. ām- bal.] White water Lily அல்லி. (பிங்.)

3.அனிச்சம் anṉiccam

, n. prob. a-nitya. Flower supposed to be so delicate as to droop or even perish when smelt; மோந்தால் வாடும் பூ வகை. மோப்பக் குழையு மனிச்சம் (குறள், 90). Imaginary flower or flower which is extinct. NO satisfactory identification yet. One of the probable identification,

4.குவளை kuvaḷlai

Fragrant water lily  செங்கழுநீர்.


5. குறிஞ்சி kuṟriñci :

Square-branched conehead, Strobilanthes kunthianus.

6. வெட்சி veṭtci :

Scarlet ixora, m. sh., Ixora coccinea;

7. செங்கொடுவேரி ceṅn-koṭdu-vēri

See செங்கொடிவேலி.  Rosy-flowered leadwort, m. cl., Plumbago rosea; ரோஜாநிறப் பூவுள்ள கொடிவகை.

8.தேமா tē-mā (தேமாம்பூ)

,[M. tēṇ- māvu.] Sweet mango, 1. tr., Mangifera indica; மாமரவகை.

9. மணிச்சிகை Maṇniccikai

Maṇiccikai is identified as kuṉṟi by TL but since kuṉṟi also figures in the list later this identification doesn’t seem appropriate. Sami has identified as Ipomea Sepiaria. Tamil Lexicon identifies this flower as mañcikai. In Sanskrit this flower is known as manjika.

10.உந்தூழ் untūḻl

பெருமூங்கில் –  Large bamboo, 1. tr., Bambusa arundinaca; மூங்கில் மரவகை.

  11. Very good collection and really good work as a botany teacher I really wonder to see both tamil as well as botanical name you can make it as a booklet to reach many common people- congrats and hats off to you

  12. A very valuable effort. I saw for the first time the flowers mentioned in Divya Prabandham and in Sanga Ilakiyam.
    Botonical names will help to identify and collect them for gardens. The Tamil University at Thanajvur whicjh has extensive gardens should cultivate and even sell the plants.

  30. அருமையான படைப்பு. இனிய  தமிழ் பூக்களின் பெயர்களை படங்களுடன் பார்க்கமுடிந்தது மிகவும் மகிழ்ச்சி. பூக்களின் தமிழ் பெயர்கள் காலப்போக்கில் மறைந்து  ம்ருவி நிற்பது குறிப்பிடவேண்டியுள்ளது. “இருள்வாசிப்பூ-நள்ளிருள்நாரி ” பெயர்மாறி  இருவாட்சி பூ ஆனது சுவாரசியம். இன்னும் பூக்களின் பெயர்களை நமது பேச்சு வழக்கு மொழியில் குறிப்பிட்டு இருந்தால் இன்னும் சிறப்பாக இருந்திருக்கும். உதாரணத்திற்கு வெட்சி பூ இட்லி பூ என்று அழைக்கப்படுவது போல். எனினும் சிறந்த படைப்பு. வாழ்த்துக்கள்.
