Hero meets Heroine in festival…gives her gift and seduces her…. Kurunthokai 223
Fifth of the ten poems from Nachiyar Thirumozhi – Vin Neela Mellappu (sky blue cloth). Love theme of Sangam transformed … More
Another gem from Auvviyar of Sangam age. A poet par excellence, most of us know her songs on Adhigaman Neduman Anci. In way some of her poems were prelude to hero build up songs in Tamil cinema. But the side most of us don’t know is the sensitive and mostly aggressive love poems. This a poem from a lover lorn Thalaivan’s point of view.
How to impress a girl? A note from 2000 year old poem!
Short and sweet poem from Kurunthokai. Quite a beautiful verse in Tamil. I have added transliterated version for people who cant read in Tamil. Enjoy this beautiful poem.
Beautiful love poem from the ancient Tamils. One more example why Tamil love literature is considered to be classic across the world.
The poem talks about how for lovers they get isolated and the whole world become each other when they are in love. Separation is a fear which they want to escape. The pain of separation is greater than death to these lovers.
Transient nature of life becomes the theme of Sivavakkiyar’s poem here. Sivavakkiyar is considered to be one of the greatest Shidda poets along side Thirumoolar and Pattinathar. His poems questions Hindu religious structure, Brahmanical supremacy, idol worship, authority of Vedas and Agamas, caste systems. He has written around 520 poems. Below poem questions the madness of love and love for oneself/body.
Warning to Husbands from Auvaiyar and most of them would have experienced this poem in their life.
Did Valentines day originate in Tamil Nadu?

The love poems of Sangam have made inroads into religion. The two best examples one can give is that of Kambaramayanam and Kanthapuranam. The Murugan- Valli love episode of Kasiappasivachariyar’s Kanthapuranam is straight lift from a few Sangam love themes(it would take me a separate blog to point this out to the readers..hope I do a blog on this topic soon!). In this essay I would like to go into Theme of Love making in Sangam literature and its parallel in Religious poetry and philosophy.
Love making and Religion …parallels? is it possible? well you have to read through this essay,
This poem is one most interesting themes of the Akam poetry. In this theme the Hero who is being denied access to meet his lady love , threatens the friend of the lover that he has already made love to her and knows all secrets if her and would expose this secret to every one if the he wasn’t granted access to his lover.
