Situation: Thalaivan (hero) is wedded to Thalaivi (heroine). Against the wishes of Thalaivi, he decides to embark on journey to earn wealth and will be away for months together. Thalaivi utters this poem.

குறுந்தொகை 20, கோப்பெருஞ்சோழன், பாலைத் திணை – தலைவி தோழியிடம் சொன்னது
அருளும் அன்பும் நீக்கித், துணை துறந்து,
பொருள் வயின் பிரிவோர் உரவோர் ஆயின்,
உரவோர் உரவோர் ஆக,
மடவம் ஆக மடந்தை நாமே.

aruḷum aṉpum nīkkit, tuṇai tuṟantu,
poruḷ vayiṉ pirivōr uravōr āyiṉ,

If the men
Who give up love and mercy,
leave behind their wives,
to earn wealth,
are considered knowledgeable,
then let these men be knowledgeable
And let us women be the stupid ones!

உரவன் uravaṉ – can be valiant or intelligent, I have taken intelligent as it plays well in the poem

Note for Palai themed poems: Just imagine impact of IT on daily life of people in Tamil Nadu. People living in cities and rushing back to native [bus stand scenes on festival days]. Go two thousand years back, Indo-Roman trade had same impact on lives of people. Men wanting to making money by moving goods from east to west coast or vice versa to participate in Rome-India-China trade. They had to rush back to families on time they promised and Families wouldn’t know if they are safe or alive during this period, due to lack of communication.

அருளும் அன்பும் நீக்கித், துணையைத் துறந்து

Grace/mercy  – love/affection  – remove – companion – leave behind 

பொருள்வயின் பிரிவோர் உரவோர் ஆயின்,

poruḷ vayiṉ pirivōr uravōr āyiṉ,

பொருள் ஈட்ட பிரிந்து செல்லும் ஆண்கள் அறிவுடையவர் ஆயின்

For wealth – separate – intelligent/strong men – become

உரவோர் உரவோர் ஆக,

uravōr uravōr āka,

அறிவுடையவர் அறிவுடையவராகவே இருக்கட்டும்!

Let strong/intelligent men – intelligent men – be

மடவம் ஆக மடந்தை நாமே.

அறிவில்லாதவராகவே இருப்போம் பெண்கள் நாமே!
