New post after long time. But a nice poem to make a come back.  The poem talks about True wealth and is also poem present in 10th std Samacheer kalvi text book.

Thalaivan is rich and is looking for some enjoyment outside the house. Thalaivi feels bad about this and cries. Thalaivi’s friend( Panki) feels bad about it and utters this poem near Thalaivan.

அரிகால் மாறிய அங்கண் அகல்வயல்

மறுகால் உழுத ஈரச் செறுவின்

வித்தொடு சென்ற வட்டி பற்பல

 மீனொடு பெயரும் யாணர் ஊர

நெடிய மொழிதலுங் கடிய ஊர்தலும்

செல்வம் அன்றுதன் செய்வினைப் பயனே

சான்றோர் செல்வம் என்பது சேர்ந்தோர்

புன்கண் அஞ்சும் பண்பின்

மென்கண் செல்வஞ் செல்வமென் பதுவே.

 தோழி தலைமகனை நெருங்கிச் சொல்லுவாளாய், வாயில் நேர்ந்தது.-மிளைகிழான் நல்வேட்டனார்

You hail from a fertile place where the

stubbles from the previous harvest

on the broad field

were removed ,

the wet field are ploughed,

to raise the new crop,

the farmers  who went with seeds

in the straw baskets

departed the fields

with many fishes

in the basket.

But you must realize that

tall words and fast mobility

isnt true wealth,

it is just results of your actions.

The greatest wealth

according wisemen

is  the kindness expressed by eyes

when it fears

the sorrowful eyes his/her kin.

The highlight to me in this poem is that Panki says these are words of Sandror – meaning I am not the one to advise you here, I just telling you what Sandror has advised.

stubble let on reaped field – changed – (that) place – broad field    

மறுகால் உழுத ஈரச் செறுவின்

crop raised second time – ploughed- wet- field

வித்தொடு சென்ற வட்டி பற்பல

with seeds- went- straw basket – many   

மீனொடு பெயரும் யாணர் ஊர

with fish – depart – fertile/wealthy- place

நெடிய மொழிதலுங் கடிய ஊர்தலும்

tall- words (praise) – swift – travelling

செல்வம் அன்றுதன் செய்வினைப் பயனே

wealth – not – one’s- action’s- result

சான்றோர் செல்வம் என்பது சேர்ந்தோர்

wisemen’s-wealth – is – kin’s

புன்கண் அஞ்சும் பண்பின்

sorrowful eyes – fearing –   manners

மென்கண் செல்வஞ் செல்வமென் பதுவே.

tenderness (as expressed by eyes) – wealth of -wealth – it is.
