One more interesting proverb from Palamozhi Nanooru about how one should do extra thing when competing with equal. Palamozhi nanooru is stuctured in such way that last line of the poem is Palamozhi (proverb) and the poet uses first two lines to describe a story or usage of the proverb. Proverb in context (i.e. proverb 1300 years ago) is that Mother is partial to her favorite kid.

Like man who has arranged for help with one nearby
his group while gambling with his equals,
however great the siblings are
mother’s love is not showered equally among her children!

While playing among equals one who arranges for extra help wins. However equal you are with your siblings, Mother always has her favorite. There are cases where mother loves her daughter more than son or among her sons/daughters etc. Great example is Bahubali where Balla had done something extra to get his mother’s love. To get better of his equal.
The traditional commentary says mother will like only one who is educated, but the meaning directly in the poem doesn’t suggest so.
