This poem is dedicated to the women and children who bare the brunt heavy office workload of their husbands. The poem which pretty much says Men being men worry more about wealth/career than family. Poem emphasizes ‘Men are like this’ as a sort proverb 2000 years ago. This theme is very universal, think movies like Mariyan or Roja or for that matter Breaking Bad where Walter White says for 4 seasons he is doing it for the family and finally confesses to skylar that he did it for himself.

மரம் சா மருந்தும் கொள்ளார், மாந்தர்;
உரம் சாச் செய்யார், உயர்தவம்; வளம் கெடப்
பொன்னும் கொள்ளார், மன்னர்-நன்னுதல்!-
நாம் தம் உண்மையின் உளமே; அதனால்
தாம் செய்பொருள் அளவு அறியார்; தாம் கசிந்து,
என்றூழ் நிறுப்ப, நீள் இடை ஒழிய,
சென்றோர்மன்ற நம் காதலர்; என்றும்
இன்ன நிலைமைத்து என்ப;
என்னோரும் அறிப, இவ் உலகத்தானே.
People don’t extract medicine at the cost of killing the (source) tree
One doesn’t do vigorous penance at the cost of destroying ones strength
King doesn’t collect gold (tax) at the cost of the well being of his citizens
Oh one with radiant forehead,
I am alive/in high spirits due to you(Thalivan) being with me
But you do not understand triviality of your wealth,
decide to punish me by creating huge gap between us
and leave to get exhausted in sunshine (in search of wealth)
The wise men say
Such is the nature of men in this world
and everyone is aware of it.

அழகிய நுதலையுடையாய்! இவ்வுலகத்து மாந்தர் மரம் பட்டுப்போகும்படி அதன்பாலுள்ள மருந்தை முற்றுங் கொள்வார் அல்லர்;
மற்றும் தம் வலிமை முற்றும் கெடுமாறு உயர்ந்த தவத்தைச் செய்யார்;
அரசர் தம்முடைய குடிகளின் செல்வமெல்லாம் குறைபடும் வண்ணம் அவரிடத்து இறை வாங்குபவரல்லர்;
அவற்றை உணர்ந்துவைத்தும் தாம் வருத்தம் மேற்கொண்டு வெயில் நிலைகொள்ள நீண்ட சுரத்துநெறி பின்னே ஒழிய எம்மைப் பிரிந்து சென்றவராகிய நங்காதலர்
தாம் ஈட்ட விரும்பும் பொருள் காரணமாக எம்மைப் பிரிவராயின் அதனாலே வருவது எமது இறந்துபாடு என்பதனைத் திண்ணமாக அறிந்தவரல்லர்; எக்காலத்தும் இதுவே ஆடவர் இயற்கை என்பர் சான்றோர்; இதனை யாவரும் அறிந்திருப்பர் கண்டாய்
