சகடம் மண்டிய துகள் தீர் கூட்டத்துக், 5
கடிநகர் புனைந்து கடவுள் பேணிப்,
படு மண முழவொடு பரூஉப்பணை இமிழ,
வதுவை மண்ணிய மகளிர் விதுப்புற்றுப்,
பூக்கணும் இமையார் நோக்குபு மறைய
மென்பூ வாகைப் புன்புறக் கவட்டிலை 10
பழங்கன்று கறித்த பயம்பு அமல் அறுகைத்
தழங்கு குரல் வானின் தலைப்பெயற்கு ஈன்ற
மண்ணு மணி அன்ன மா இதழ்ப் பாவைத்
தண் நறுமுகையொடு வெந்நூல் சூட்டித்,
தூ உடைப் பொலிந்து மேவரத் துவன்றி, 15
மழை பட்டன்ன மணன் மலி பந்தர்,
இழை அணி சிறப்பின் பெயர் வியர்ப்பு ஆற்றித்
தமர் நமக்கு ஈத்த தலைநாள் இரவின்,
“உவர் நீங்கு கற்பின் எம் உயிர் உடம்பு அடுவி!
முருங்காக் கலிங்கம் முழுவதும் வளைஇப் 20
பெரும் புழுக்குற்ற நின் பிறை நுதல் பொறி வியர்
உறு வளி ஆற்றச் சிறு வரை திற” என
ஆர்வ நெஞ்சமொடு போர்வை வவ்வலின்,
உறை கழி வாளின் உருவு பெயர்ந்து இமைப்ப,
மறை திறன் அறியாள் ஆகி ஒய்யென 25
நாணினள் இறைஞ்சியோளே, பேணிப்
பரூஉப் பகை ஆம்பல் குரூஉத் தொடை நீவிச்,
சுரும்பு இமிர் ஆய் மலர் வேய்ந்த
இரும் பல் கூந்தல் இருள் மறை ஒளித்தே.

குற்றம் நீகப்பட்ட இறைச்சியின் கொழுப்பு இளகிய வெண்மையான சோற்றை
அளவு இல்லாமல் ஈகைத்தன்மையுடன் அளித்து, பெரியோரை பேணிப்
பறவையின் சகுனம் கூடிவந்த, தெளிவான ஒளியையுடைய
அழகிய இடத்தில் வானம் பொலிவுடன் இருக்க நிலவு
ரோகிணியைச் சேரும் குற்றமற்ற நல்ல நாளில் உறவினர் சேர்க்கையில்,
திருமண வீட்டை அலங்கரித்து, கடவுளை வேண்டி,
முழங்குகின்ற மண முழவுடன், பெரிய மேளம் ஒலிக்க,
மணமகளை நீராட்டிய மகளிர், விரைவாக/விருப்பத்துடன்,
பூ போன்ற கண்களை இமைக்காமல் நோக்கி மறைந்துகொள்ள,
மென்மையான பூவையுடைய வாகையின் சிறு பின் புறத்தை போல் உள்ள பிளவுபட்ட இலையையும்,
முதிய கன்று கடித்துத் தின்னும் பள்ளத்தில் படர்ந்த அறுகம்புல்லின்
முழங்குகின்ற குரலையுடைய வானத்தில் கூடும் மேகம் ஈன்ற
கழுவிய முத்தைப் போல அழகான இதழையுடையக் குரவ மலரின்
குளிர்ந்த மணமுள்ள மொட்டுக்களுடன் கட்டிய வெண்மையான நூல் மலையை அணிவித்து,
தூய உடை பொலிவுபெற விருப்பத்துடன் நெருங்கிக்கட்டி
மழை பெய்த ஒலியையுடைய பெரிய மணப்பந்தலில்
இழைப் போன்ற அணிகலன்களை அணிந்த அழகுடன், தோன்றிய வியர்வையை தணித்து,
உறவினர் நமக்குத் தந்த முதல்நாள் இரவிலே,
வெறுப்பை நீக்கிய கற்பினையுடைய என் உயிர்க்கு உடம்பாககி சேர்ந்தால்
கசங்காத நல்லாடையை உடம்பு முழுவதும் போர்த்திக்கொண்டதால்
‘பெரும் பபுழுக்கத்தால் உனது பிறை போன்ற நெற்றியில் புள்ளிகளாய் வியர்வைத் துளிகளை
அங்கு வரும் காற்று ஆற்றிவிட சிறிது நேரம் அந்த ஆடையைத் திற’ என்று கூறி,
ஆர்வ நெஞ்சத்துடன் போர்த்தியிருந்த ஆடையை கவர்ந்து இழுத்ததால்
உறையை நீக்கிய வாளினைப் போல அவள் உருவம் வெளிப்பட்டு மின்ன
மேனியை மறைக்கின்ற வழி அறியாதவள் ஆகி விட்டு ஒதுங்க
நாணத்தால் குனிந்து தன் மான்பைப் பாதுகாகப்
பருமனான எதிர் எதிராக கட்டப்பட்ட மின்னும் ஆம்பல் மாலையை நீக்கி
வண்டுகள் ஒலிக்கும் கொய்த மலர்களைச் சூடின
பெரிய செழிப்பான இருண்ட கூந்தலை கொண்டு தன் மேனியை மறைத்தாளே

They served meat cooked to perfection,
with its fat melted on white rice,
liberally without limit to people gathered
with great hospitality.
At the time when good omens united with
clear beautiful sky where
moon joined the Sadagam (Rohini) star
to remove faults,
the clan decorated the wedding dais
and seeked protection of the god,
with sounds of large pot arising
from the beating muzhavu drums,
and musical instruments.
In preparation for the Vathuvai ceremony,
girls who desired the event and watched
with unblinking eyes like flowers,
hid and bathed her and adorned her with
forked leaves
of soft small flowers of Vakai
along with blossomed flower buds
of kuruvam with washes pearl like beautiful petals
grown in valleys where Arukam grass
spread over pits where mature calfs graze,
tied together by as garland by white thread,
pure cloth which made her desirable,
ornaments which made her beautiful
and wiped her sweat.
In the first night after her kin gave her to me
in the large marriage pavillion,
which sounded roar of the rains,
I said,
“you have come to be the body to my soul
with your learning which removes faults!
you are fully clothed with creaseless dress,
it is hot and your forehead is sweating
why don’t you open your dress a bit
to let the air comfort you?”
Saying so with a heart filled with desire
I snatched her cloth and she glittered
like a sword removed from the sheath,
unable to hide she removed her ambal garland
and hid herself under the Luxuriant black tresses
With fragance of the plucked flowers
Which the bees buzzed
shyness flowed out of her,
she bowed her head
and Pleaded with me!

மைப்பு அறப் புழுக்கின் நெய்க்கனி வெண்சோறு
maippu aṟap puḻukkiṉ neykkaṉi veṇcōṟu
Early biryani style, where meat is cooked with rice, so that meat fat gets mixed with rice [except for Ambur biryani no other indian style of Biryani has ice cooked with meat, they are oly mixed for Dum]
முழவு – muḻavu – this drum is still used and integral part of Kudiyattam of Kerala. Interestingly the female dancers of Kudiyattam are called Viralaiyar, the exact same name of dancers in Sangam age.
அறுகை – aṟukai – arukampull – Cynodon grass
கற்பு¹ kaṟpu – root word is learning. Evolution of the word seems to be that phase of life (married life) which is learning or phase where you act as per learnings (scocial norms and tradition). Eventually we have a meaning of chastity, viginity.
கலிங்கம் – kaliṅkam – fine garment – most likely silk imported from China into Kalinga (Orissa) in the pre sangam age. During Ashoka’s period, Kalinga was still a dravidian language speaking state/country.
பிறை நுதல் – piṟai nutal – crescent moon like forhead
