எரி கவர்ந்து உண்ட என்றூழ் நீள் இடைச்
சிறிது கண்படுப்பினும், காண்குவென் மன்ற,
நள்ளென் கங்குல் நளி மனை நெடு நகர்,
வேங்கை வென்ற சுணங்கின்
தேம் பாய் கூந்தல் மாஅயோளே.

eri kavarntu uṇṭa eṉṟūḻ nīḷ iṭaic
ciṟitu kaṇpaṭuppiṉum, kāṇkuveṉ maṉṟa,
naḷḷeṉ kaṅkul naḷi maṉai neṭu nakar,
vēṅkai veṉṟa cuṇaṅkiṉ

தீ கவர்ந்து உண்ட வெப்பமுள்ள நீண்ட இடைவழியில்
சிறிது கண்ணயர்ந்தாலும், காண்கிறேன், உறுதியாக,
நடு இரவில், பரந்த மனையில் உள்ள நீண்ட இல்லத்தில்
வேங்கைப் பூக்களையும் வென்ற அழகுத்தேமலையும்,
தேன் ஊற்றும் கூந்தலையும் உடைய என் அழகு மிகு மாநிற காதலியை!

Ainkurunūru 324, Ōthalānthaiyār, Pālai Thinai – What the hero said
Even if I close my eyes for an instant
on this long path,
Which appears to be seized and eaten by the fire,
in this summer,
I clearly see my dark skinned girl,
with hair flowing with fragrance of honey
with golden beauty spots,
which was more beautiful than vengai flowers,
In the wide halls of the magnificent house
at the midnight!

வேங்கை vēṅkai , n. [T. vēgi, M. veṅṅa.] 1. Tiger, Felis tigris; புலிவகை East Indian kino tree, l. tr., Pterocarpus marsupium
This flowers, when seen in the night provides an illusion of tiger. Hence named after the animal.

தொய்யில் toyyil occurs very frequently in Sangam literature. They are sandal paste paintings on the breast. This is from an African tribe.

சுணங்கு cuṇaṅku , 1. [M. cuṇaṅṅu.] Yellow spreading spots on the body of women, regarded as beautiful; அழகு தேமல். 2. Sallow complexion of a love-lorn woman; பசலை. 3. A spreading skin-disease, especially of animals; படர்புண் வகை. 4. Pollen-dust; பூந்தாது.

சுணங்கு cuṇaṅku is natural marks on breast either freckles or Paleness patch on the breast. Since these women had natural marks instead of toyyil, these women were considered natural beauties.
