Canto one: The Blessings
சிலப்பதிகாரம் – புகார்க் காண்டம்
மங்கல வாழ்த்துப் பாடல்
Puhar(Poompuhar) was a wealthy river port and capital of the Chola kingdom. The splendor of the town rivaled that of the heaven.
In this wealthy city lived a very generous and famous person ‘மாநாய்கன் ‘(Maanaaikan), who owned many ships. He was as generous as a cloud in season of rains.
அவளுந்தான்,
போதில்ஆர் திருவினாள் புகழுடை வடிவென்றும்
தீதிலா வடமீனின் திறம்இவள் திறம்என்றும்
மாதரார் தொழுதுஏத்த வயங்கிய பெருங்குணத்துக்
காதலாள் பெயர்மன்னும் கண்ணகிஎன் பாள்மன்னோ,
He had a daughter whose yet to be twelve(ஈராறுஆண்டு அகவையாள) ,was admired by the women of Puhar as beautiful as Goddess of fortune(திருவினாள – Lakshmi) and as virtuous as the northern star (வடமீனின- Arundati).
In Puhar there also lived a princely merchant, who posses vast treasure and gave good part of his wealth to the needy and poor people. His name was Maasanthuvaan (மாசாத்து வான)
பண்தேய்த்த மொழியினார் ஆயத்துப் பாராட்டிக்
கண்டுஏத்தும் செவ்வேள்என்று இசைபோக்கிக் காதலால்
கொண்டுஏத்தும் கிழமையான் கோவலன்என் பான்மன்னோ.

He had a son who was sixteen and his fame has already traveled beyond the boundaries of the country and young girls with gentle face as pale as new moon would say to their friends with love and heavy sigh”Can there be any doubt that Kovalan is really incarnation of Sevvel(செவ்வேள- Murugan god of youth and beauty).
இருபெருங் குரவரும் ஒருபெரு நாளால்
மணஅணி காண மகிழ்ந்தனர், மகிழ்ந்துழி
யானை எருத்தத்து அணிஇழையார் மேல்இரீஇ
மாநகர்க்கு ஈந்தார் மணம்.
Both the noble families wished with joy and happiness to see Kannagi and Kovalan get married on a grand day. With great happiness they sent beautiful women mounted on elephants, throughout the city to invite guest to a feast.
முரசுஇயம்பின, முருகுஅதிர்ந்தன,
முறைஎழுந்தன பணிலம்,வெண்குடை
அரசுஎழுந்ததொர் படிஎழுந்தன,
அகலுள்மங்கல அணிஎழுந்தது.
மாலைதாழ் சென்னி வயிரமணித் து¡ணகத்து
நீல விதானத்து நித்திலப்பூம் பந்தர்க்கீழ்
வான்ஊர் மதியம் சகடுஅணைய வானத்துச் 50
சாலி ஒருமீன் தகையாளைக் கோவலன்
மாமுது பார்ப்பான் மறைவழி காட்டிடத்
தீவலம் செய்வது காண்பார்க்கண் நோன்புஎன்னை.
On the day of marriage,the two drums, murasu (முரசு) and Murugu(முருகு-drum used in Murugan worship) was beaten, and conch(பணிலம also known as சங்கு) was blown and the white parasol(வெண்குடை) was raised high in sky as if it was royal parade which proceeded through street(அகலுள) that echoed with auspicious music. With youthful grace they entered a canopy (விதானத்த) with ‘pandal’ made out of blue silk and pearls(நித்தில), with pillars studded with diamonds and adorned with garland of auspicious flowers.This was a auspicious day, the moon(மதியம) which wanders in sky came closest to Rohini star(சகடு- the star of happiness).
Kovalan approached his bride who was as faithful as Arundati (சாலி the wife of sage Vasista) the star in sky after he went around the sacred fire raised by the Brahmin as prescribed by the Vedas (பார்ப்பான் மறைவழி காட்டிடத்).Blessed were the eyes which witnessed a rare sight of the splendid marriage.
விரையினர் மலரினர் விளங்கு மேனியர்
உரையினர் பாட்டினர் ஒசிந்த நோக்கினர் 55
சாந்தினர் புகையினர் தயங்கு கோதையர்
ஏந்துஇள முலையினர் இடித்த சுண்ணத்தர்
விளக்கினர் கலத்தினர் விரித்த பாலிகை
முளைக்குட நிரையினர் முகிழ்த்த மூரலர்
போதொடு விரிகூந்தல் பொலன்நறுங் கொடிஅன்னார் 60
காதலற் பிரியாமல் கவவுக்கை ஞெகிழாமல்
தீதுஅறுக எனஏத்திச் சின்மலர் கொடுது¡வி
அங்கண் உலகின் அருந்ததி அன்னாளை
மங்கல நல்அமளி ஏற்றினார், தங்கிய
இப்பால் இமயத்து இருத்திய வாள்வேங்கை 65
உப்பாலைப் பொன்கோட்டு உழையதா எப்பாலும்
செருமிகு சினவேல் செம்பியன்
ஒருதனி ஆழி உருட்டுவோன் எனவே.
Women who gave side glances (ஒசிந்த நோக்கினர) carried flowers and fragrant odorous(விரை) substances and shy women with beautiful hair(தயங்கு கோதையர்) who had tender breast carried ground powder(இடித்த சுண்ணத்தர்), incensed smoke(புகையினர) and sandal(சாந்தினர்) paste to rub onto the body. Women sprout like budding happy smile(முகிழ்த்த மூரலர்) carrying lamp and pots and spread the buds of leaf palikai. Women with flower blossoms on the spread out hair praised “long live to creeper like copulating lovers, who melted (ஞெகிழாமல) in the long stretching arm of another (கவவுக்கை). May your faultless love last for ever without separation.” spreading flowers around the bed(அமளி) and sent girl who Arundati(அருந்ததி) of this world on to the auspicious bed. Leaving her , they murmured a prayer:
“May the tiger, emblem of our king
Carved on the Himalaya’s golden peak,
Forever stamp that king of mountains’brow.
And may the Chola, our great king,
Whose spear is sharp, unfailing in the fight,
Uphold, before the nations of the world,
The golden discuss, the symbol of his power.”(Portion in red translated by Alian Danielou)
After word: I wanted to give only an abridged version but ended nearly giving a translation. Most of the translation here is mine (I had Alian Danielou’s translation as a reference when I struggled to make sense with my translated version). The portion in red is original Translation of Alian Danielou. For translation I used Tamil Lexicon of Madras University to understand meaning of the original Tamil words.It took around 10 hours to complete this. But I am not sure if it’s completely error free. If any one finds a mistake, I am ready to discuss it and correct it.
