You would have heard this very popular song from Katru Veliyidai – Nallai Allai nal irave. But did you know the lyrics of the song is inspired from a Sangam poem…
Here is the poem and translation for you…
Kurunthokai 47
Transliteration
Karun kaal vendgai vee ugu tharukal
irum puli kurulai in thondrum kaatidai
elli varunar kalvirku
nallai allai nedu ven nilave
Translation
Fallen flowers of black trunk Vengai trees in the hills
Appear like large tiger cub
and scares my lover who comes through the forest to
Have secret union with me in the night.
It is not good of you wide moon ( For not being bright enough)
Poet: Nedu Ven Nilavar
Translated by Palaniappan Vairam Sarathy
The poem is such a famous poem, the poet is pretty much named after the poem.
Word by Word translation:
கருங் கால் வேங்கை வீ உகு துறுகல்
Black – bottom – Malabar Kino tree (flowers) –falling – hills
இரும் புலிக் குருளையின் தோன்றும் காட்டிடை
large tiger cub alike appear between the forest
Night – coming – for secret union
நல்லை அல்லை-நெடு வெண்ணிலவே!
Good – not – wide/broad – moon
I doubt whether the blogger cares to consider points raised in comments on his blog, I had pointed out possibility of deeper significance in terms of uruvaham in an earler posting which has not caught his attention. Tamil literature should not be treated as onlysexy. Rangachari
