This is an interesting poem from Palamozhi nanooru. Palamozhi nanooru is stuctured in such way that last line of the poem is Palamozhi (proverb) and the poet uses first two lines to describe a story or usage of the proverb. This proverb tells about protecting family and what Yudhishtra did to save his family. So technically these proverbs were considered old age saying 1300 years ago – that’s show how old Tamil Language is!

நிரம்ப நிரையத்தைக் கண்டந் நிரையம்
வரம்பில் பெரியானும் புக்கான் – இரங்கார்
கொடியார மார்ப! குடிகெட வந்தால்
அடிகெட மன்றி விடல்.
Even when he knew hell awaited him, if he lied
the eldest one (Yudhistra) chose to enter hell!
Oh one with pearl garland on the chest! Do not show mercy!
If some one tries to ruin your family,
make sure you destroy their roots!

Bheema kills a elephant Ashwathama on Krishan’s advice and shouts he has killed Ashwathama (son of Drona). Drona goes to Yudhistra as he speaks only truth. Yudhistra tells a lie that Aswathama is dead when Drona asks if his son is dead, to save his family and win the war. Dhrona was proving to be too good for them to beat in the war. hearing the sorrowful news. Dhrona gives up his weapon and enters penance. Dhrupadha who has vowed to kill him , kills him when he is weaponless and in penance. The above poem recalls this incident.

The interesting surprise is that the versions of Mahabaratha we know still has Yudhistra going to heaven and he never telling lie as he say Aswathaman then elephant but Krishna blows th e conch to make ‘the elephant ‘ inaudible to Dhrona. So this possibly shows there were many versions of Mahabaratha.

தனிவடமாகிய முத்து மாலையை உடையவனே! பொய் கூறினால் உளவாகுந் துன்பத்தை நூல்களால் மிகுதியாக அறிந்தும் அந்நரகஉலகத்தின்கண் எல்லையற்ற குணங்களாற் பெரிய தருமனும் அரசாட்சி பெற்றுத் தங் குடியை நிலைநாட்டும் பொருட்டுப் பொய் கூறிப் புகுந்தான் (ஆதலால்) தங்குடி கெடுமாறு தோன்றுவதொன் றுண்டானால் அவர் தீமையுறுதலுக்கு அஞ்சாராகி, தங்குடிநோக்கிவேரறத் தண்டஞ் செய்துவிடுக.
- தருமன் தன்குடியை நிலைநாட்ட அசுவத்தாமன் இறந்தான் என்று பொய் கூறினன். ஆதலால் குடி குன்ற வருஞ்செயலை எதிர்த்து எது செய்தாலும் ஒழிக்க என்பதாம்.
