Situation: Thalaivan (Hero) is away and has sent a messenger, a singing minstrel/bard to appease his lover (Thalaivi). Seeing the status of Thalaivi being away from Thalaivan, the bard feels pity. Thalaivi feels Thalaivan doesn’t even have the pity/emotions displayed by Bard. She mocks the Thalaivan through this poem. This poem also packs a beautiful imagery to describe women’s eye.

தொடி நிலை கலங்க, வாடிய தோளும்,
வடி நலன் இழந்த என் கண்ணும் நோக்கிப்,
பெரிது புலம்பினனே சீறியாழ்ப் பாணன்,
எம் வெங்காதலொடு பிரிந்தோர்
தம்மோன் போலான், பேரன்பினனே.

bangles falling off,
shoulders growing weak,
eyes losing its young mango shaped beauty,
the bard with small lute
greatly grieved!
The bard is a very kind man,

Notes:
Mental health is important aspect of Sangam literature. They dig deep in depression, anxiety caused by separation. Here the heroine is depressed and it affects her physical appearance as she is getting leaner and due to consistent crying, he eyes are losing her beauty.
Visual imagery:
These poems typically narrate the antiquity of Sangam themes. Traditionally these poems were sung by bards who were messengers between lovers. Eventually these themes were utlized by court poets who sang these songs before kings to get ‘Parisil’ – reward.
