Should I take it or not? – Narrinai 359

Situation: Thalaivan (Hero) is in love with Thalaivi (heroine). He gives her a new dress made up leaves (apparent fashion in the tribal cultures). Thalaivi doesn’t know whether to take it or not. She is afraid her mother will find out about her love if she wears a new dress. She is also afraid if she returns it, her lover will feel depressed. Poet beautifully describes the effort taken by the lover and also has beautiful imagery for describing mother’s intuition.

நற்றிணை 359, கபிலர், குறிஞ்சித் திணை – தோழி சொன்னது
சிலம்பின் மேய்ந்த சிறு கோட்டுச் சேதா
அலங்கு குலைக் காந்தள் தீண்டி தாது உகக்,
கன்று தாய் மருளும் குன்ற நாடன்
உடுக்கும் தழை தந்தனனே; யாம் அஃது
உடுப்பின் யாய் அஞ்சுதுமே; கொடுப்பின் 5
கேளுடைக் கேடு அஞ்சுதுமே; ஆயிடை
வாடல கொல்லோ தாமே, அவன் மலைப்
போருடை வருடையும் பாயா,
சூருடை அடுக்கத்த கொயற்கு அருந்தழையே?

Tawny colored cow grazing in the slopes
Suspiciously looks at the calf brimming
with pollens fallen from Kantal flowers
as the calf came in contact with them,
in the mountains of my man,
Who gave us the leaf garment!
If we wears it, we need to be afraid of our mother,
If we return it, we need to be worried about the distress
Thalaivan would undergo thinking we are not in love with him.
In the meanwhile will the leaves,
which are difficult to pluck are from
the mountains with deities, where even valiant
mountain goats are unable to leap around
stay fresh?

Notes:

I highly suspect this was poem written from Thalaivi’s point of view and not Panki (friend). Since the colophon says it is uttered by friend, in this case friend addresses ‘we’ as a substitute for Thalaivi’s feeling.

First part of poem about cow and calf makes no logical sense to the poem, it had a nice spin to it. See the images to understand them.

varuṭai or Ibex can climb on near vertical walls and are expert climbers. They are used in the poem to glorify effort taken by the hero.

சூர் – cūr – could be some fierce deity like Karuppu or celestial women. cūr is traditional rival of Murugan who is also believed to be in Mountains. cūr or cūran doesn’t have negative connotation like later asuran [which was probably associated with Near Eastern Asur].

A movie scene with exact situation comes up in Kumki Tamil movie. In movie Heroine settles to wear the dress for hero and goes back to her costume before she goes home!

உடுத்திக்கொண்டால் என் தாய் என்ன செய்வாள் என்று அஞ்சுகின்றேன்; திருப்பிக் கொடுத்துவிட்டால்

கேளுடைக் கேடு அஞ்சுதுமே; ஆயிடை

kēḷuṭaik kēṭu añcutumē; āyiṭai

என் காதலன் படும் துன்பம் நினைத்து அஞ்சுகின்றேன்; இதற்கிடையில்
