Situation: Thalaivan (hero) is in love with Thalaivi (heroine). Thalaivan meets Thalaivi secretly during the day, Thalaivi feels lonely rest of the day. She is sad that Evening is coming and more afraid that the lonely night is going to arrive soon.

குண்டு நீர் ஆம்பலும் கூம்பின, இனியே

The petals of the white water lily closed,
making it look like the small back of the egret with green legs,
As the evening approached! May it live long!
Not only that, night will approach soon!
Notes:
Thalaivan meets Thalaivi secretly during the day, Thalaivi feels lonely rest of the day. She is sad that Evening is coming with closing of water lily buds. For her even evenings are manageable, as there would be people around her. But the night will soon come which will accentuate her loneliness and push her into depression, making her long more for her lover.
Kokku can mean Crane, Egret or Herons [possibly even flamingos]. Green legs and back like Ambal (white lily) are the identifiers here. Night Herons have green legs but are not white.
