This is a hilarious poem, completely came in as surprise when I first read it. This is an excerpt from a Paripatal poem
Situation: People of Madurai, see fresh flood waters in Vaigai and decided to play, spend time in Vaigai. Here a couple encounter a funny situation (for us and tragic for the couple involved) in the shores of Vaigai.
7 வையை - பாடியவர் : மையோடக் கோவனார் பண் அமைத்தவர் : பித்தாமத்தர் பண் : பண்ணுப்பாலையாழ்
விரும்பிய ஈரணி மெய் ஈரம் தீர,
சுரும்பு ஆர்க்கும் சூர் நறா ஏந்தினாள் கண் நெய்தல்;
பேர் மகிழ் செய்யும் பெரு நறாப் பேணியவே
கூர் நறா ஆர்ந்தவள் கண்;
கண் இயல் கண்டு ஏத்தி காரிகை நீர் நோக்கினைப் 65
பாண் ஆதரித்துப் பல பாட, அப் பாட்டுப்
பேணாது ஒருத்தி பேதுற, ஆயிடை
என்னை வருவது எனக்கு என்று இனையா,
நன் ஞெமர் மார்பன் நடுக்குற நண்ணி,
சிகை கிடந்த ஊடலின் செங்கண் சேப்பு ஊர, 70
வகை தொடர்ந்த ஆடலுள் நல்லவர் தம்முள்
பகை தொடர்ந்து கோதை பரியூஉ, நனி வெகுண்டு,
யாறு ஆடு மேனி அணி கண்ட தன் அன்பன்
சேறு ஆடு மேனி திருநிலத்து உய்ப்ப, சிரம் மிதித்து,
தீர்வு இலதாகச் செருவுற்றாள், செம் புனல். 75
ஊர் உடன் ஆடும் கடை

naṉ ñemar mārpaṉ naṭukkuṟa naṇṇi,
cikai kiṭanta ūṭaliṉ ceṅkaṇ cēppu ūra, 70
vakai toṭarnta āṭaluḷ nallavar tammuḷ
pakai toṭarntu kōtai pariyūu, naṉi vekuṇṭu,
yāṟu āṭu mēṉi aṇi kaṇṭa taṉ aṉpaṉ
cēṟu āṭu mēṉi tirunilattu uyppa, ciram mitittu,

To end the chill
Caused by the wet swimwear she adorned with desire,
She drank the fierce fragrant wine,
causing her eyes like (white) water lilies,
get intoxicated and appear like
the big (red) naravam flower!
Seeing her beautiful eyes on the clear waters,
A husband/lover sang singing her praise,
without understanding the intention, another girl
got seduced at that place.
The husband/lover with wide chest
sensed the situation
And wondered
‘what is coming to torment me now?”
He tremblingly approached his wife/lover,
who was sulking with fuming red eyes, seeing the girl
among groups of people continued to play in the river,
She continued her enmity with him
And exhibited her rage by shredding her garland
He admired her jewel like body bathing in the river
And prostrated his sandal paste smeared body before her !
She kicked his head in rage,
there was no solution to their quarrel,
at the red sand banks of river,
Where people played in this town!
Notes:
- Paripatal is dated around 500 – 700 AD, atleast 200 years after original Sangam poems.
- It is widely believed that Paripatal poems are not Sangam poems, but since they follow the traditions of Sangam poems and traditionally classified as Sangam poems, it is generally called as Late Snagam poems in academic circles.
- Social situation in Paripatal is much different than in Sangam literature. Sangam poems are not religious in nature while Paripatal is dedicated to poems on Murugan, Perumal and Vaigai.
- Poems here tend to be more erotic than Sangam poems which allude to themes with erotic nature and never directly erotic.
- In Kalithokai and Paripatal, we see cosmopolitan nature displayed than Sangam literature which are set mostly in towns and villages.
- Nara – means liquor as well as Naravam flower, poet has used both usage in the poem

செம்மையான நீரில் ஊர் மக்களுடன் நீர் ஆடிய இடத்தில்,
நீச்சலாடை உடுத்திய உடலின் ஈரம் தீர,
வண்டுகள் மொய்க்கும் கொடுங் கள்ளை குடித்ததனால்,
நெய்தல் போன்ற வெள்ளை கண்களையுடையவள்;
பெரு மகிழ்ச்சியைத் தரும் பெரிய நறவ மலரின் சிவப்பு நிறத்தைப் பெற்றால்
சிவந்த அழகிய கண்களின் இயல்பினைக் கண்டு, தலைவியின் அழகிய பார்வையை பாராட்டி,
பாடல் பாட விரும்பி, பல பாடல்களைப் தலைவன் பாட
அந்தப் பாடல்களைப் யாருக்காகப் பாடப்படுவது என்று புரியாமல் அங்கிருந்த ஒருத்தி மயங்கிப்போக, அப்பொழுது என்ன துன்பம் வருமோ எனக்கு என்று வருந்தி
நன்கு பரந்த மார்பினையுடைய தலைவன், நடுங்கிப்போய் தலைவியின் அருகே செல்ல,
முன்னிறுத்த ஊடலின் மீதியால் சிவந்த கண்கள் மேலும் சிவப்பாக
முறையோடு தொடர்ந்த நீரில் விளையாடியப் பலருள்ளே இருந்த ஒருத்தியோடு
பகை தொடர்ந்த, தன் பூமாலையை அறுத்தெறிந்து, மிகுதியானக் கோபத்துடன்
ஆற்றில் விளையாடும் தலைவியின் மேனி அழகைக் கண்ட தலைவன்
சந்தனம் பூசிய தன் மேனி அழகிய நிலத்தில் படும்வண்ணம் அவளை வணங்க, அவனுடைய தலையை மிதித்து
தீராமல் தொடரும் ஊடல் கொண்ட தலைவி, செம்மையான வைகைநதியில்
ஊர் உடன் நீர் ஆடிய இடத்தில்
