Unique poem which talks about Ego between couples.

Situation: Thalaivan (Hero) is married to Thalaivi (Heroine). Thalaivan wants to leave Thalaivi to earn wealth (possibly participate in Indo – Roman trade) which would keep him away atleast for 3-4 months. Thalaivi is opposed to the idea. They have an ego war. Thalaivi utters this poem to her friend.

குறுந்தொகை 43, ஔவையார், பாலைத் திணை – தலைவி தோழியிடம் சொன்னது
செல்வார் அல்லர் என்று யான் இகழ்ந்தனனே,
ஒல்வாள் அல்லள் என்று அவர் இகழ்ந்தனரே,
ஆயிடை இரு பேர் ஆண்மை செய்த பூசல்
நல் அராக் கதுவியாங்கு, என்
அல்லல் நெஞ்சம் அலமலக்குறுமே. 5

kuṟuntokai 43, auvaiyār, pālait tiṇai – talaivi tōḻiyiṭam coṉṉatu
celvār allar eṉṟu yāṉ ikaḻntaṉaṉē,
olvāḷ allaḷ eṉṟu avar ikaḻntaṉarē,
āyiṭai iru pēr āṇmai ceyta pūcal
nal arāk katuviyāṅku, eṉ
allal neñcam alamalakkuṟumē. 5

என்னை பிரிந்து செல்லமாட்டார் என்று நான் அலட்சியமாய் இருக்க,
பிரிவதை ஒற்ற்றுக்கொள்ளமாட்டாள் என்று அவர் அலட்சியமாய் இருக்க,
அந்நேரம் இருவரும் அகங்காரத்தில் இருந்ததால்வந்த வேதனை,
நல்ல பாம்பு கௌவிக் கடித்ததைப் போல்,
என் துன்புற்ற நெஞ்சத்தை வாட்டியது!

Kurunthokai 43, Avvaiyār, Pālai Thinai – What the heroine said to her friend
I thought ‘he will not go’
and I was careless!
He thought ‘she will not consent’
and he was careless!
Now my heart is suffering pain,
Like being seized and
bitten by an Indian cobra,
due to the fight
that arose from our egos
at that time !

This poem is by Avvaiyar who is one of the greatest love poets of Tamil. She is different from author of religious poems and Aathichudi . Please see here
The poem discusses about Ego between couples. The word for Ego here is āṇmai, which is interesting as today’s usage is Manliness or being valient. But in Tamil etymology – Manliness, Bravery and Ego has same root. So here the Thalaivi says both of them due to their āṇmai, didnt yield. So possibly not yielding is base meaning of Manliness, Bravery and Ego.

This poem discusses an universal relationship problem of making assumptions about spouse’s intention, not taking efforts to make better communication, holding on to ego and not compromising.
Personally I feel Avvaiyar’s poem are more bold and aggressive from a female standpoint and she stands out as poet in Sangam literature era.

நல் அராக் கதுவியாங்கு, என்

nal arāk katuviyāṅku, eṉ

நல்ல பாம்பு கௌவிக் கடித்ததைப் போல், 

Good – snake – seize bite – move- my

அல்லல் நெஞ்சம் அலமலக்குறுமே.

allal neñcam alamalakkuṟumē

என் துன்புற்ற நெஞ்சத்தை வாட்டியது!
