Situation: Thalaivan(Hero) and Thalaivi (heroine) are in love and they meet secretly every day. As days go by it is difficult for them to meet. This poem is uttered by Thalaivi’s friend (Panki/Thozhi) urging Thalaivan to marry her soon instead of having a clandestine relationship.

குறுந்தொகை 123, ஐயூர் முடவனார், நெய்தற் திணை – தோழி தலைவியிடம் சொன்னது, சிறைப்புறத்தானாக இருந்த தலைவன் கேட்கும்படி
இருள் திணிந்தன்ன ஈர்ந்தண் கொழு நிழல்,
நிலவுக் குவித்தன்ன வெண்மணல் ஒரு சிறைக்
கருங்கோட்டுப் புன்னைப் பூம்பொழில் புலம்ப,
இன்னும் வாரார், வரூஉம்
பன் மீன் வேட்டத்து என் ஐயர் திமிலே. 5

There are moist cool shades

Of the dark branches of the Mastwood trees,

in the lonely grove,

on the side of white sand,

which appeared like heaped moonlight!

He has not yet come!

But my brother’s boat would

soon arrive with many fishes!

This could have been either Thozhi uttering the poem to Thalaivi or vice versa. It is not clear in the poem. As it was common to use collective nouns such as we, our to declare individual feelings. Either way meaning of the poem will be the same.

இருள் திணிந்தன்ன ஈர்ந் தண் கொழு நிழல்,

இருள் திணித்ததைப்போல் ஈரத்தால் குளிர்ச்சித்தரும் கொழுத்த நிழலையுடைய,

Darkness – stuffed alike – moist – cool – spread/prosper- shade

நிலவுக் குவித்தன்ன வெண்மணல் ஒரு சிறைக்

nilavuk kuvittaṉṉa veṇmaṇal oru ciṟaik

நிலா குவித்து வைத்ததுப் போல் வெண்மணலின் ஒரு பக்கத்திலிருக்கும்,

Moon – heap – white – sand – one – side/shore

கருங்கோட்டுப் புன்னைப் பூம்பொழில் புலம்ப,

karuṅkōṭṭup puṉṉaip pūmpoḻil pulampa,

கரியக் கிளைகளையுடைய புன்னை மரங்களை கொண்டப் பூஞ்சோலை தனித்துக்கிடக்க

Dark – branch – mast wood – flower – groove – lonely

இன்னும் வாரார், வரூஉம்

iṉṉum vārār, varūum

இன்னும் வரவில்லை உன் காதலன், வருகிறது

Yet – he has not come – will come
