Situation: Thalaivi (Hero) is in love with Thalaivan (hero), but he is avoiding her in fear of village gossip or Thalaivi is locked up due to gossip. Thozhi (friend) utters this poem so they plan something different and unite with each other.
குறுந்தொகை 166, கூடலூர் கிழார், நெய்தற் திணை – தோழி சொன்னது
தண் கடல் படுதிரை பெயர்த்தலின், வெண்பறை
நாரை நிரை பெயர்ந்து அயிரை ஆரும்
ஊரோ நன்று மன் மரந்தை,
ஒரு தனி வைகின் புலம்பு ஆகின்றே.
kuṟuntokai 166, kūṭalūr kiḻār, neytaṟ tiṇai – tōḻi coṉṉatu
taṇ kaṭal paṭutirai peyarttaliṉ, veṇpaṟai
nārai nirai peyarntu ayirai ārum
ūrō naṉṟu maṉ marantai,
oru taṉi vaikiṉ pulampu ākiṉṟē.

ஊராகிய மரந்தை இனியது;
ஒருவர் தனியே இருந்தால் மன உளைச்சலாக மாறுகிறது!

White winged storks fly in patterns
to eat loach/aiyirai fish which have migrated
due to arrival of the cold crashing cold waves
in the joyful Maranthai city!
If someone is alone it becomes a place of grief !

Heron/crane/stork – in order/crowd – pass- aiyirai fish – eat

ஊராகிய மரந்தை இனியது;
Village – good – ! – Maranthai city
ஒரு தனி வைகின் புலம்பு ஆகின்றே.
