One of beautiful poems of Sangam Puram Literature or the Heroic poetry. Mother describes duty of father, king, blacksmith and her son. In a war prone era, it was essential each and every male to be prepared for war and battle. The poem reflects this beautifully.
312. காளைக்குக் கடனே!
ஈன்று புறந்தருதல் என்தலைக் கடனே;
சான்றோன் ஆக்குதல் தந்தைக்குக் கடனே;
வேல்வடித்துக் கொடுத்தல் கொல்லற்குக் கடனே;
நன்னடை நல்கல் வேந்தற்குக் கடனே;
ஒளிறுவாள் அருஞ்சமம் முருக்கிக்,
களிறுஎறிந்து பெயர்தல் காளைக்குக் கடனே.
To give birth and bring him out is my duty (mother).
To make him wise man is the duty of the father.
To make lance for him is the duty of blacksmith.
To direct him in the right path is the duty of the king.
To hold a shinning sword in the battle, slaughter elephants into pieces,
and come back, is the duty of the young man!

Recently I didnt read a few posts. And today went through all of them. I’m very much astonished to know the custom of “Matal”( posted on Aug-31 ) that was practised during Sangam era.
The astonishment is because of the reason, that I have not learnt it so long being a tamilian and a person fond of Tamil Poems and History.
I feel very happy about reading this blog !! Though I could not read books by myself, I am happy to get it through your blog. I wonder How much you will be reading in order to put the gist to us here.

இப்பாடலில் வரும் நன்னடை என்பது பாடபேதம்.அ.ப.பாலையன் உரை தண்ணடை என்பதே சரியானது. தண்ணடை நல்கல் என்றால் போரில் வெற்றி பெற்ற வீரனுக்கு மருத நிலத்து ஊர்களை வழங்குதல்.(புறம்287) காண்க.
