Describe Auvvaiyar – most likely answer, old women with stick who sang proverbs and was disciple of Murugan and Eesan. This is one of the greatest Myths which you can safely debunk. In one of my other post I have written how at least 3 poets existed in Tamil Nadu with name of Auvvaiyar.

The first one was of Sangam Age. A poet par excellence, most of us know her songs on Adhigaman Neduman Anci. In way some of her poems were prelude to hero build up songs in Tamil cinema. But the side most of us don’t know is the sensitive and mostly aggressive love poems.  Like an additional depth in cinema lyrics of Thamarai or Uma Devi, Auviayar had additional depth when it comes to love poems. There is no reference this Auvaiyar was old. Who knows she could have been young women in her 20s or middle aged women!

Below is poem, which literally is the one liner for Katru Veliyidai.

102. நெய்தல்

உள்ளின், உள்ளம் வேமே; உள்ளாது

இருப்பின், எம் அளவைத்து அன்றே; வருத்தி

வான் தோய்வற்றே, காமம்;

சான்றோர் அல்லர், யாம் மரீஇயோரே.

– ஒளவையார்

If I think of him my heart burns;

To not think of him is beyond my limit;

Distress due to my passion has touched the sky

He is not wiseman, the one who I had embraced!

Thalaivan has left Thalaivi in search of wealth or has not come back after his union with Thalaivi. Thalaivi is not able to ignore him and feels Thailavan should be a stupid guy to leave her alone and be away instead of being near her and hugging her.

So what do you think – is this Auvaiyar old or a younger women??
