The poem’s colophon reads as below,
What Perunchitranar said when he went seeking reward from Adhiyaman Neduman Anchi and the king gave away gift through his guard when his guard reported that the poet was waiting to sing praise of him and get reward.
‘குன்றும் மலையும் பல பின் ஒழிய,
வந்தனென், பரிசில் கொண்டனென் செலற்கு’ என
ஈங்கனம் செல்க, தான்’ என, என்னை
யாங்கு அறிந்தனனோ, தாங்கு அருங் காவலன்?
காணாது ஈத்த இப் பொருட்கு யான் ஓர்
வாணிகப் பரிசிலன் அல்லென்; பேணி,
தினை அனைத்துஆயினும், இனிது அவர்
துணை அளவு அறிந்து, நல்கினர் விடினே.
அதியமான் நெடுமான் அஞ்சியுழைச் சென்ற பெருஞ்சித்திரனாரைக் காணாது,’இது கொண்டு செல்க!’ என்று அவன் பரிசில் கொடுப்பக் கொள்ளாது, அவர் சொல்லியது.
I have come here,
after crossing hills and mountains
To get reward from you.
You are guardian,
who enemies find difficult to attack,
You have given me gift (to appease my poverty)
and asked me to leave
without knowing who I am.
But I am not merchant,
I would not accept a reward
from anyone who has not seen my talent,
Even if it is just a millet,
if you had rewarded me with a smile
after valuating my talent
It would have been much better.

Talk of the self esteem of this poet. He says he is not here for a profit like Merchant who is happy when he receives the price without any cost. He says he is poet, he wants a barter for his poem. He feels the quality of his poem should decide the reward he should get, not his background, not his poverty, not his hardships. That is self esteem.
This message is particularly important in present with reality show voting and our mentality in appraisal cycles.
