இனிய புத்தாண்டு வாழ்த்துக்கள்! I am writing a post after a big break. So I hope this poem is worth while.
All the world’s a stage,
William Shakespeare – As you like it
And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances;
One of the most famous quotes of Shakespeare to indicate the transient nature of the world by comparing it to stage where actors come in and leave in their turns. But very similar expression has been used by Sangam poet Uraiyūr Muthukannan Sāthanār around 2000 years ago.
விழவின் கோடியர் நீர்மை போல முறை முறை
ஆடுநர் கழியும் இவ் உலகத்து
Like the professional dancers in the festival
Who enter and exit by turns
Things come and go in this transient world!
Uraiyur Muthukannan Sathanar – Purananooru 29
Probably next time you hear some one talking about all the world is stage, you should point out such mature thoughts were existent in Sangam poems.
One more reason why you should read Tamil classical literature.

இசைப்புறனாக நீ ஓம்பிய பொருளே.
Your joyous day court is surrounded
by bards,
Who wear fine garlands on their disheveled dark heads,
With shining ornaments of gold made by fine craftsmen,
And lotus made from thin metal plates,
borne out of fire,
fastened tightly with beautiful thread!
After the bards leave you,
may your women’s shoulders embrace
your chest with dried sandal paste,
Your drums roar sweetly in your courtyard
where no one tires.
May you punish the evil people,
nourish the virtuous without losing strength or justice,
not becoming like those who say that
“good dead’s goodness and evil dead’s evil do not exists”.
Joyous soldiers of your army
who received fertile lands,
chase birds that descend on the paddy fields,
roast salt water fish with stems of fallen palm leaves as fire wood,
drink highly intoxicating toddy,
not satisfied,
drop tender coconuts with water from coconut palms!
You show pity on those who do not adhere with your views!
You help people
who live in small huts
made by mounting roof of arrowroot leaves on four poles
And seek you!
May your actions are in accordance with your tradition!
Like the professional dancers in the the festival
Who enter and exit by turns,
Things come and go in this transient world!
Let your happy kinsmen gather behind you and
The wealth you have protected sustain your fame beyond you!
