Situation: Thalaivan (Hero) is in love with Thalaivi (Heroine). Their love is exposed and Thalaivi’s parents lock her up. Thalaivi with help of her friend (Panki) elopes with Thalaivan. Thalaivi’s relatives regret their action and go in search of Thalaivi. This poem is uttered by the foster mother/mother of the girl who has become tired searching for the girl.
குறுந்தொகை 44, வெள்ளிவீதியார், பாலைத் திணை – செவிலித்தாய் சொன்னது
காலே பரி தப்பினவே, கண்ணே
நோக்கி நோக்கி வாள் இழந்தனவே,
அகல் இரு விசும்பின் மீனினும்
பலரே மன்ற, இவ் உலகத்துப் பிறரே.
kuṟuntokai 44, veḷḷivītiyār, pālait tiṇai – cevilittāy coṉṉatu
kālē pari tappiṉavē, kaṇṇē
nōkki nōkki vāḷ iḻantaṉavē,
akal iru vicumpiṉ mīṉiṉum
palarē maṉṟa, iv ulakattup piṟarē.

My legs can’t walk anymore,
my eyes have lost its splendor.
looking at each and everyone!
There are certainly more people
(Other than my daughter)
in this world than the
stars in the wide dark sky!

பலர் இருக்கிறார்கள், இந்த உலகத்தில் என் மகளைத்தவிர பிற மாந்தர்!
