Situation: The Thalaivan and Thalaivi have fallen in love. The have secret tryst with the help of the Thalaivi’s friend (panki). Since this is a neythal poem , it has sea side settings. So the lovers decide to meet in the beaches near the punnai grooves. The Thalaivan comes to the place early and decides to hide in the grooves and watch the reaction of the Thalaivi. Thalaivi has seen thalaivan hiding and utters this poem to panki in a loud voice so that Thalaivan can here it.
She is a different person in the night with her lover and total stranger in the morning when she is with her family!
The love poems of Sangam have made inroads into religion. The two best examples one can give is that of Kambaramayanam and Kanthapuranam. The Murugan- Valli love episode of Kasiappasivachariyar’s Kanthapuranam is straight lift from a few Sangam love themes(it would take me a separate blog to point this out to the readers..hope I do a blog on this topic soon!).
