Fire Stick – Neruppu Da- Purananuru 315

Avviyar is often the most understood poet in the history of Tamil literature. She is often thought to be an old lady and famous for her encounters with Murugan and Ganesha. There were poets in the name of Avvaiyar or Auvaiyar in Tamil literature. The poet of Sangam age was a master of love poems. Also, she is probably the first exponent of build-up songs and punch dialogues more famous now with Mass heroes of the Tamil film industry.

புறநானூறு 315, பாடியவர்: ஔவையார், பாடப்பட்டோன்: அதியமான் நெடுமான் அஞ்சி, திணை: வாகை, துறை: வல்லான் முல்லை

உடையன் ஆயின் உண்ணவும் வல்லன்,
கடவர் மீதும் இரப்போர்க்கு ஈயும்
மடவர் மகிழ் துணை நெடுமான் அஞ்சி,
இல் இறைச் செரீஇய ஞெலிகோல் போலத்
தோன்றாது இருக்கவும் வல்லன், மற்றதன்  5
கான்றுபடு கனை எரி போலத்
தோன்றவும் வல்லன், தான் தோன்றுங்காலே.

uṭaiyaṉ āyiṉ uṇṇavum vallaṉ,
kaṭavar mītum irappōrkku īyum
maṭavar makiḻ tuṇai neṭumāṉ añci,
il iṟaic cerīiya ñelikōl pōlat
tōṉṟātu irukkavum vallaṉ, maṟṟataṉ 5
kāṉṟupaṭu kaṉai eri pōlat

He eats what is left, 

He likes giving to people

Who seek his help  

more than for people he owes!

He gives company to naive people 

and makes them happy!

He is capable of hiding his nature,

like igniting stick 

kept under sloping roof.

He is capable of appearing 

like the ignited stick ,

when rubbed 

causing intense fire

when he decides to reveal his nature!

Poem basically says Adhiyaman was king who mingled with common people and remained simple. He liked to gift things to people who need help than give it to his family and his people. But seeing this one shouldn’t misunderstand he is not capable of war. He is like fire when it comes to war.
