Situation: Thalaivan (hero) and Thalaivi (heroine) are meeting each other secretly with help of Panki (friend of Thalaivi). Thalaivan is too romantically involved and Panki warns him that if their mother gets to know about Thalaivi’s affair she will lock her in the house like how Cholas lock their tribute in Kudavayil (Kumbakonam). Interestingly for people who have seen Ponniyin Selvan movie, they would have seen a scene where Vandhiyathevan (Karthi) actually stumbles by Chola’s treasury locked in a cage. The poem interesting notes that barter price of pound of salt is pound of white rice. Also Aayirai – Mackerel kolambu was popular dish 2000 years back (still is!).

பெருங்கடல் பரப்பில் சேயிறா நடுங்கக்
கொடுந்தொழின் முகந்த செங்கோல் அவ் வலை
நெடுந்திமில் தொழிலொடு வைகிய தந்தைக்கு,
உப்பு நொடை நெல்லின் மூரல் வெண்சோறு
அயிலை துழந்த அம்புளிச் சொரிந்து, 5

For her father
Who has taken up a harsh job
Of travelling in long boats
With long road and beautiful nets
On the big sea
where the red prawns tremble
Do not press her bright bangles hard!
Her mother gets angry and blabbers
that her beauty will diminish
even while we play orai or
build castle in the dense shores
with tall sands deposited by the winds,
(If she gets to know),
She will keep her in guard
without any justice
Like the victorious cholas
with glorious lance
Who Secured the tributes
they received from their subordinate states
in Kumbakonam!
Notes:
Poet is from Kudavayil (near Kumbakonam) in Chola Country. But praises Thondi of Chera. This could means Chera and Chola could have been in some kind of alliance at that point.
Thondi is near present day Cannannore in Kerala. It was important port for Roman trade and was described as Tyndis in Greco-Roman records and was trade emporium per Roman sources. In Sangam literature it is known as great port town with great wealth.

Father does his job even if it is harsh , as it his duty [Intention of Panki] → Will you do your duty of marrying the young girl ?
Hero meets heroine usually while she plays with friends. Sandcastle plays important role. The hero can destroy it for fun. This later turns into religious literature where Krishna destroys the sandcastle of young girls [Andal, Namalvar]
Sangam kings had rudimentary governance structure. Their main source of revenue was tax, tolls and tributes. Their main job was protection. The 3 bigger kings had ports with international trade giving them a stable source of income from tolls. Though their countries (Chola,Chera,Pandiya) were very small they were possibly as rich as bigger kingdoms. Possibly like today’s Singapore or Dubai.
Timil : ‘Timil’ is another type of boat. The meanings given in Tamil lexicon for timil are a) catamaran, small boat and b) vessel,. ship. From the literary sources it is understood that timil had been mainly used for fishing and it resembles a catamaran. No boat is mentioned by the name timil in modem times. For pearl fishing also timil was used.
The timil that was used for fishing is said in literature as tintimil or kotuntimil because of its sturdiness and also its use in killing big sharks and other fishes
In literature, timil is generally compared with ‘elephant’ which indicates the side planks, breadth and the general size of timil . No reference is cited in the literature for a timil with a sail.

ஓரை விளையாட்டை ஆடினால் “குறைந்துவிடும் உன் ஒளிபொருந்திய அழகு” எனக்
குழறி சிவந்து கோபிக்கும் அன்னை கண்டால்,
வெற்றி வேலையுடைய அரசாண்மை உள்ள சோழரின் குடந்தை நகரில் வைத்த
பகை நாடுகள் தரும் கப்ப நிதிக்கு (உள்ள காவலைக் காட்டிலும்), அடைத்து
கடுமையான காவலில் வைத்துவிடுவாள் அறனில்லாத அவள் தாய்!
