Store Water – gain eternal glory! Puram 18

Took a long time for this post. But one of most brilliant poems in Puram genre.

Kutapulavaiyanar advising Pandiyan Nedunchliyan to acquire some skills to attain eternal glory and not to be forgotten by this world.

You are from the clan where you ancestors

through their own efforts earned glory

in the vast world covered by roaring sea and sky!

Let your life multiply with glory ten hundred crore times!

You possess

large forts with deep moats

filled with groups of valai, slender eel , plump murel fish

which greedily feed on the kanchi flowers

and walls which touch the sky.

You rule the ancient town with great wealth.

Listen to me carefully,

if you want to have wealth in the world you go (after life)

if you want to be guardian of the world

who would crush your enemies with your strong shoulders

acquire the skills I propose for  winning the world!

Body cannot exists without water!

food gives life,

our flesh is result of food,

food is result of water on land,

water mingling with land creates the body and the soul,

If the sown land, under the protection of the king,

dependent on rain becomes dry land it is of no use.

Cheliya, you wage war to kill enemies,

dont be negligent, act promptly !

build dams and confine water in tanks

on hollow lands on the earth where water flows

Those who are not capable (of saving water) will diminish (in glory) in this world!

பரந்துபட்ட வியன் ஞாலம்

தாளின் தந்து தம் புகழ் நிறீஇ

Stem/leg/foot – give – his – praise /glory – erect/fix/determined

ஒரு தாம் ஆகிய உரவோர் உம்பல்

One – them – become – relationship – descendent/family/tribe

ஒன்று பத்து அடுக்கிய கோடி கடை இரீஇய

One – ten – piled up – crore – last – drive away/ruin

பெருமைத்து ஆக நின் ஆயுள் தானே

குரூஉக் கெடிற்ற குண்டு அகழி
large-fort/alarming – deep – protection moat

வான் உட்கும் வடி நீண் மதில்
sky – touching – structure – your – walls

மல்லல் மூதூர் வய வேந்தே
fertility/wealthy – ancient town – strong – king

செல்லும் உலகத்துச் செல்வம் வேண்டினும்
going – world – wealth – if you need

ஞாலங் காவலர் தோள் வலி முருக்கி
world – guardian – shoulder –strength – crush/ruin

ஒரு நீ ஆகல் வேண்டினும் சிறந்த
one – you – become – for sake of – becoming great

நல் இசை நிறுத்தல் வேண்டினும் மற்றதன்
good – acquire – determine/set in place – for sake – other

தகுதி கேள் இனி மிகுதியாள
qualities – hear – from now – increase/abundance/excellence

நீர் இன்று அமையா யாக்கைக்கு எல்லாம்
water – without – not set – body – all

உண்டி கொடுத்தோர் உயிர் கொடுத்தோரே
food – give – life – give

உண்டி முதற்றே உணவின் பிண்டம்
food – results – food caused– flesh/body

உணவு எனப்படுவது நிலத்தொடு நீரே
food – means – land with water

நீரும் நிலனும் புணரியோர் ஈண்டு
water – land – mingle – yield

உடம்பும் உயிரும் படைத்திசினோரே
body – soul – create

வித்தி வான் நோக்கும் புன்புலம் கண்ணகன்
sow – sky – seeing – dry/waste land – firm protection

வைப்புற்று ஆயினும் நண்ணி ஆளும்
land – eventhough – unite – govern

இறைவன் தாட்கு உதவாதே அதனால்
king – for  – not help – so

அடு போர்ச் செழிய இகழாது வல்லே
kill – war – Cheliya – not negligent – promptly/quickly

நிலன் நெளி மருங்கின் நீர்நிலை பெருகத்
earth– hollow – land – water source – grow

தட்டோர் அம்ம இவண் தட்டோரே

To confine, as water in a tank; to dam up – he –

தள்ளாதோர் இவண் தள்ளாதோரே. –

Not capable – he – will diminish
